Indignant Arts is a new producing company making original musical theatre in the North East of England. It comes after three years of collaboration between composer performer Katie Doherty and Joe Hufton.
Indignant Arts exists to:
• Produce original musical theatre work, for theatres and performance spaces across the country and beyond
• Champion the stories of the North East and respond to issues and themes that feel current and relevant
• Create professional work with exceptional creatives, that is tour-ready to ensure longevity and exposure
• Work with local communities in County Durham and the broader North East to inform, guide and create our work
Katie Doherty is an award winning songwriter and composer, well known for her work in theatre. She has written songs and composed scores for countless productions including for Novo Theatre, Northern Stage, Open Clasp, Cap-a Pie and The RSC.
As a performer Katie has performed alongside Kathryn Tickell and Nitin Sawhney, Kate and Anna Mc- Garrigle, Karine Polwart and Ray Davies amongst others. With her band Katie Doherty and The Navigators, Katie released her second album in 2019 to critical acclaim, airplay all over Europe, and live sessions on BBC Radio 2 and 3. Her third album with the Navigators, FLOW entered the official Folk Album Charts top 30 in August 2022.
Joe Hufton is a theatre director and producer based in the North East of England. His work has been seen in 7 countries in conventional theatre spaces and unusual site-specific venues. He has directed new musical theatre for venues including Streatham Space and Arts Theatre.
His theatre work has been seen Southwark Playhouse, The Egg, Bath, Salisbury Playhouse, Alnwick Playhouse and more. Joe is one of the most accomplished names in the British immersive and site-specific theatre scene, most recently creating 'Cbeebies Rainbow Adventure' and directing Taskmaster: The Live Experience. He is the current Artistic Director and CEO of Novo Theatre (formally November Club).
